Amid the ongoing H-1B debate, DOGE co-chief Vivek Ramaswamy slammed the American culture and pointed out many things that are wrong in American schooling. And one of them was ‘venerating Cory from Boy Meets World‘ over Steve Urkel in Family Matters. He was explaining why top tech companies hire foreign-born and first-generation engineers over native Americans.
“Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG,” Vivek Ramaswamy said.
“A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers,” Ramaswamy added.
“More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”
“Most normal American parents look skeptically at “those kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such “those kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve,” Vivek Ramaswamy wrote.
What Ramaswamy wrote is the American culture that many identified with and are proud of and so social media users slammed Ramaswamy for denigrating the very American culture, the American shows that most of the Americans grew up watching.
Laura Loomer who is the main force in this controversy reacted to Ramaswamy’s criticism of Boy Meets World and said, “Silly white people. Stop watching Boy Meets World and turn on Bollywood so you can watch rape culture steal your job culture.”
What is the H-1B row?
H-1B is a visa in the United States that allows US companies to employ foreign workers. It is the largest visa category in the US. The present row started with the nomination of Indian-origin Sriram Krishnan as the AI advisor. Krishnan recently said that the country caps for this H-1B visa should be waived which would benefit India as India has one of the highest applicants for H-1B visa but because of the country cap, the waiting period for Indians is long.
Though Krishna as an AI advisor would not do anything regarding immigration, his appointment rattled Make America Great Again activists, including Laura Loomer who denounced the appointment and then criticized India.
