Amid the ongoing uproar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has ignited a new political storm by openly challenging senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar.

Speaking at a public event, Banerjee said that if the BJP leaders truly wished to prove their connection with the people, they should give up their CISF security and visit Dankuni.

“Let’s see whether they can even return from there or not,” he warned, adding, “Will see how Amit Shah takes him out safely from here.Come, Sukanta and Suvendu, bring your men, we will bring ours too. Come without the police; we will also be there without the police.”

Following his remarks, political tensions in Bengal have intensified. Banerjee criticised BJP leaders for, in his words, “always talking about meeting people while staying behind their security cover,” claiming they lacked the courage to step into public spaces without protection. “They trust their security personnel more than they trust the people,” he added.

Reacting to Banerjee’s threat, BJP Spokesperson Pradeep  Bhandari said, “TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee openly threatens to kill BJP leaders Dr. Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari if they come without CISF protection! In Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s government is the biggest threat to Democracy! State in Bengal is behind violence! Save Bengal!”

SIR begins in West Bengal today

The controversy unfolds as the Election Commission of India (ECI) conducts the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states, including West Bengal. The large-scale exercise begins today and aims to update and verify voter lists ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Under the initiative, Block Level Officers (BLOs) are carrying out door-to-door visits to verify voter details, distribute and collect forms, and eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries. The drive is scheduled to continue from 4 November to 4 December 2025, with the final voter roll set for publication by February 2026.

Political backlash and protests

The SIR process has become a political flashpoint in Bengal. The TMC has accused the BJP of using the revision process to intimidate voters and manipulate the rolls. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to lead a protest march in Kolkata on 4 November, joined by party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, to denounce the exercise.
