US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has announced the launch of a nationwide education tour under the banner “Returning Education to the States.” The initiative involves visiting all 50 states, with the aim of highlighting state-led education models and promoting localised approaches to education reform.According to the US Department of Education, the tour is aligned with President Trump’s broader objective to return control of education policy and decision-making to the states. Secretary McMahon will begin the official kick-off of the tour with visits to Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee next week.Tour objectives focus on decentralisation and engagementThe Department stated that the tour is intended to gather input directly from students, teachers, and school leaders on effective education models at the local level. The initiative aims to spotlight educational practices that are reported to improve learning outcomes and reflect the needs of families and communities across different states.During the tour, Secretary McMahon will visit schools and classrooms, engage with stakeholders, and collect information on locally driven solutions. These engagements are set to provide a broad overview of how states are adapting to evolving educational demands and implementing reforms without federal intervention.Emphasis on choice and tailored solutionsIn her announcement, Secretary McMahon said, “President Trump entrusted me with a vital mission to return education to the states, and part of that is learning best practices from each state.” She added that the tour is an opportunity to listen to educators, students, and local leaders, and to understand the innovations being developed at the community level.Secretary McMahon further emphasised the importance of educational freedom and adaptability, stating that she is exploring how families can be supported in choosing the educational paths best suited to their children’s needs. The Department’s messaging reflects a recurring focus on school choice and local governance.Initial stops in the southern regionThe tour will begin with visits to three southern states—Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee. These initial stops will mark the formal start of what the Department describes as a national listening exercise. The selection of these states aligns with the administration’s strategy to prioritise direct engagement and decentralisation efforts in various regions.According to the Department, additional states and schedules will be announced in due course. The tour is expected to run through all 50 states, though no completion timeline has yet been confirmed.Part of broader federal education agendaThe tour forms part of the Trump administration’s broader education agenda, which includes reducing federal involvement in local schooling and promoting state-level autonomy. The “Returning Education to the States” campaign is designed to reflect that approach, highlighting regional efforts while collecting insights to inform federal strategy moving forward.Secretary McMahon’s 50-state journey will serve as a comprehensive overview of the current state of US education, as observed directly through site visits and interactions across diverse communities.TOI Education is on WhatsApp now.
