Massachusetts cop shot: Fellow officer fired during armed confrontation; fiancé had warned of danger to infant

The fiancé of an off-duty Massachusetts police officer, who asked for an abuse prevention restraining order against her, said he feared she might harm their infant son and take her own life, after she was shot during an armed confrontation by fellow officers while they were attempting to serve her the notice, revealed the court record. The North Andover firefighter requested for order against 28-year-old new mother Kelsey Fitzsimmons, fearing that the troubling and suicidal behavior she displayed during and after her pregnancy could worsen and pose a threat to their 4-month-old son, reported The Boston Globe. “I fear she will kill the baby at any moment,” he wrote in the order application.“Kelsey is threatening to take the baby ‘far, far, far away for a long, long time.’ This is how she has spoken about killing herself in the past,” he added. “She punched her stomach repeatedly while pregnant, saying she would kill herself and the baby.”The firefighter fiancé claimed the danger became clearer during a June 28 gathering with friends, when Fitzsimmons allegedly punched him in the face three times and, in a drunken fury, ran after him and their infant as he sought refuge at a friend’s house.He stated that their group of friends contacted four separate police departments during the incident, which concluded with Fitzsimmons’ parents arriving to assume custody of the child.“I fear if she doesn’t have me she will kill the baby because she has said she has nothing besides me,” he wrote. ”Fitzsimmons is a danger to myself, her son and herself,” according to The New York Post.The new father also cautioned police that Fitzsimmons would likely react poorly to being served the restraining order, a prediction that proved accurate on Monday evening when three officers showed up at the home to deliver it.Essex county district attorney Paul Tucker stated that Fitzsimmons was involved in an “armed confrontation” with fellow officers, during which she was shot once in the chest by one of them.Fitzsimmons was airlifted to a Boston hospital, where she is currently in stable condition, according to the district attorney.Fitzsimmons, who had been with the Andover police department for under two years, gave birth to a baby boy on February 16, according to local outlet CNHI.Court records reveal that less than a month later, she was involuntarily hospitalized for 12 hours at Lowell General Hospital to receive treatment for postpartum depression following struggles with mental health.After being discharged on March 10, Fitzsimmons turned in her department-issued firearm along with at least one of her personal weapons.She was placed on administrative leave on April 30, and her license to carry firearms was temporarily suspended due to her mental health-related hospitalization.Her attorney stated that Fitzsimmons was receiving treatment for postpartum depression, attending therapy sessions and being cared for by a psychiatrist.
