The Bihar assembly election results have delivered a crushing blow to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), not just in terms of immediate legislative power, but also in its long-term representation in the upper house of Parliament. For the first time in perhaps three decades, the RJD faces the grim prospect of having no members in the Rajya Sabha when the next Bihar assembly elections are conducted in 2030, marking a severe decline in the party’s national influence.

The party’s poor performance in the assembly polls is the direct cause of this impending crisis. The RJD contested 141 seats as the lead partner in the Mahagathbandhan (INDIA bloc) but managed to secure only 16 wins while leading in just eight other constituencies. This minimal showing—a fraction of the seats needed to mount a meaningful challenge to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—has drastically reduced the party’s strength in the electoral college responsible for electing Rajya Sabha members.

The decline in RJD’s assembly strength will have cascading effects on the six Rajya Sabha seats allocated from Bihar that are scheduled for election between now and 2030. Each Rajya Sabha seat requires the support of approximately 41 to 45 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), depending on the number of vacant seats. With the RJD’s total tally barely crossing the mid-twenties, the party lacks the necessary numbers to secure even one seat independently.

The current tenure of several RJD Rajya Sabha members, including those who have been key voices for the party in Delhi, is set to expire over the next few years. Without a significant resurgence or a dramatic shift in the political landscape through alliances, the party will be unable to nominate and successfully elect replacements. This situation is particularly critical for a party that has historically relied on the Rajya Sabha to project its national presence and provide a platform for veteran leaders who could not contest or win assembly polls.

The prospect of having zero representation in the Rajya Sabha by the end of the decade signals a complete marginalisation of the party at the national level. It forces the RJD leadership to confront not only the strategic failures that led to the assembly defeat but also the urgent need to rebuild its electoral strength to secure future legislative berths in both Delhi and Patna. The collapse of the RJD’s electoral base directly threatens its political legacy and its influence within the national opposition ecosystem.
