‘Justice for Trey Reed’Trey’s family issues statement, calls for a thorough investigation
Mississippi hanging: What happened to Trey Reed, Black student found hanging at Delta State University? Were his bones broken?
Bolivar County Coroner’s office asserted that there was no foul play in Demartravion “Trey” Reed’s death.

Demartravion Trey Reed, the 21-year-old Black student, who was found hanging from a tree at the Delta State University campus, Mississippi, allegedly committed suicide with no foul play involved. But online chatter that his bones were broken triggered speculation and conspiracy theories that Trey Reed did not commit suicide and was probably killed, and the incident was made to look like a suicide. But the Bolivar County Coroner’s office dismissed those claims and confirmed that they did not find any broken bones in the preliminary examination. “At 7.32 am, the Bolivar County Coroner’s office was notified by the Cleveland Police Department regarding an unresponsive individual on the campus of Delta State University. At 8.08 am, representatives from the coroner’s office arrived on the scene and observed and unresponsive subject hanging from a tree,” the statement read.“At this current time, we are conducting a thorough death investigation. Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death,” the statement said. Reed’s body will be transported to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

‘Justice for Trey Reed’

Social media users called for justice for Trey Reed, claiming that he had bruises, broken arms and a broken leg. “A Black man would NEVER commit suicide this way, and his arms and legs were broken, but police are ruling out foul play,” one wrote. “At approximately 7:05 am, University Police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a Black male hanging from a tree (at) central campus near the DSU pickleball course,” said Delta State University Chief of Police Michael Peeler. “We later identified the male subject to be Demartravion Reed of Grenada, Mississippi.”Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark said he saw no broken limbs. “I don’t think I should probably discuss this any further than that. My opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that,” he said.

Trey’s family issues statement, calls for a thorough investigation

Trey’s family issued a statement calling for a thorough investigation. “Please, do your own research on this. Do not let them sweep nothing under the rug. Enough is enough,” said Reed’s cousin. “Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well-mannered, and would give you the world if he could. We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times,” the family said.
