Carissa Jane Smith, a 30-year-old former substitute teacher in the US state of Missouri, faces multiple charges for allegedly offering students money, alcohol, and marijuana in exchange for sex.
Smith, from Dixon, located 130 miles southwest of St Louis, offered students money, alcohol, and marijuana to engage in sexual acts with her, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. This included offering payment typically $100 for sex and for allowing her to perform oral sex on them. The Sheriff’s Office also said that Smith offered the students money to keep the encounters secret.
Dixon Middle School hired Smith in September 2022 as a long-term substitute, according to a New York Post report.
Smith is accused of engaging in sexual acts with students between August 2023 and September 2024. The alleged incidents occurred at various locations, including Smith’s home and on roadsides. One alleged encounter reportedly took place on a gravel road.
One victim recounted an incident in which Smith, who is married and has children, allegedly forced him to ejaculate inside of her. The victim then reacted “That was f—ked up,” after the encounter. Smith reportedly offered him additional money afterward.
Another young accused Smith of soliciting him for sex while he was in middle school.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office arrested Smith on November 12. The investigation is ongoing.
According to court documents, Smith allegedly used Snapchat to communicate with at least one victim, sending explicit photos and offering money in exchange for sex.
“Smith began sending them pictures of her breasts and buttocks, along with her nude in the shower,” said a Daily Mail report, citing court documents.
The student was allegedly instructed to remain silent. “You know you can’t talk about this with anybody?,” the victim said what Smith told him.
In another instance, Smith is accused of smoking marijuana with a student and Lacey Beam, a former school nurse for the Dixon School District. After dropping Beam at her home, Smith took the student to McDonald’s as her husband was at the residence with their children, according to the court documents.
Smith is charged with eight counts of statutory rape, one count of sodomy, three counts of sexual contact with a student, two counts of sexual misconduct with a student, one count of patronizing prostitution, two counts of sexual trafficking a child, and two counts of hindering prosecution, according to a New York Post report.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility of additional charges. Smith is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
Dixon R-1 School District Superintendent Travis Bohrer said the district learned of the allegations earlier this year and cooperated with the sheriff’s office’s investigation. The district conducted its internal investigation and has been in contact with the families of the victims. Bohrer called the situation “very disturbing and distressing,” according to a New York Post report.
