Opposition leaders said this Bill is to keep allies Nitish Kumar and N Chandrababu Naidu in line, as they are “most fearful” and the NDA government is “worried” about their support

The opposition has its own reasoning why Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced in Parliament the three “draconian” Bills for removal of  prime ministers, chief ministers and ministers arrested for more than 30 days on criminal charges.

And that reason, according to opposition parties, is leverage. While one said this is to keep allies Nitish Kumar and N Chandrababu Naidu in line, another said the two chief ministers are “most fearful” and the Narendra Modi-led government is “worried” about their support. One went as far as to appeal for the two leaders to “wake up” and take stock of this “decisive step towards creating an Orwellian state”.

Congress leader KC Venugopal claimed that Shah has brought this “dangerous” Bill to distract “threaten” Naidu and Nitish.

“When Vote Chori is on everyone’s minds, When RahulGandhi ji’s Yatra is getting unparalleled support, When Opposition Governments need to be targeted, When allies like Chandrababu Naidu garu and Nitish Kumar ji need to be threatened… The Home Minister brings this dangerous Bill that strikes at the heart of the Constitutional principles of federalism,” Venugopal wrote in a post on X.

Venugopal said he rose to oppose the introduction of the “draconian” Constitutional (130th Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha.

Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT), meanwhile, said Naidu and Nitish were “most fearful” when it comes to this Bill. “Modi-Shah introduce a bill in Parliament to arrest and sack CMs and ministers. Naidu and Nitish are reportedly most fearful. Modi govt worries they might withdraw support!” he wrote in a post on X.

Fellow Bihari, Manoj Jha of the RJD called for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to “wake up” and oppose the Bill. “The proposed Bill is not just a legislative move; it is a decisive step towards creating an Orwellian state, whereby the BJP aims to create an ‘opposition-free democracy’ or whatever name it acquires. Please wake up Sir(s) Nitish Kumar and N Chandrababu Naidu,” he wrote on X.

Jha shared Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s post on the matter, which said the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill is a “blatant attack on federalism and the rights of states”.

“It seeks to destabilise non-BJP governments by weaponising central agencies, jailing opponents on false charges, and disqualifying them. Democratic forces must resist this neo-fascist assault,” Vijayan said on X.

The three Bills have drawn fierce protests from the opposition. Amid calls of “draconian” and “misuse”, they were on Wednesday referred to a joint parliamentary panel. While the ruling side said the proposed legislation provides “a solution for people like Arvind Kejriwal”, opposition parties said they are “against the principles of natural justice”.
