Top NDA sources have confirmed to CNN-News18 that the next Vice President of India will be from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), putting to rest any speculation around a consensus candidate from alliance partners. According to senior coalition insiders, the individual being considered will be someone with a strong ideological alignment with the BJP and extensive experience in parliamentary procedure.
The sources added that multiple factors are being weighed, given that the new Vice President will be in office for a full five-year term. The party is looking for a figure who can seamlessly uphold the dignity of the office while reinforcing the government’s legislative agenda in the Rajya Sabha, where the Vice President serves as Chairperson.
Contrary to political chatter, leaders from the JD(U) or any other NDA constituents are not in the fray for the position. “Speculation around JD(U) or other NDA leaders being considered for the Vice President’s post is unfounded,” said a top-level source, emphasising that all alliance partners, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and JD(U), are in full agreement with the BJP’s approach.

The discussions follow the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose abrupt exit as Vice President sent shockwaves through the political landscape. While the reasons for his departure remain unclear, insiders suggest it created a sense of urgency within the NDA to swiftly consolidate support behind a successor who aligns closely with the party’s vision for the next phase of governance.
