The BJP’s working president Nitin Nabin is all set to be elected unopposed as the party’s national president after his was the sole name proposed at the end of the withdrawal of nominations on Monday.

According to Dr K Laxman, the national returning officer of the BJP’s Sangathan Parv, only one name — that of Nitin Nabin — was proposed for the post of national president after the period of withdrawal.

“Now, after the period of withdrawal, in my capacity of National Returning Officer, Sangathan Parv, Bharatiya Janata Party, I hereby announce that only 1 name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of National President of Bharatiya Janata Party,” Laxman said in a press statement.

Nabin, 45, was appointed as the BJP’s national working president on December 14, 2025, and will be the youngest ever to hold the post of national president. He will succeed senior leader JP Nadda in the role as the party’s 12th national president. Top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have backed his candidature.

Laxman, in the press note, said the election process for the BJP national president was initiated after the election of 30 state presidents out of 36 states, well above the required number of completing minimum 50 percent of the states. On January 16, the schedule was notified and the electoral roll published.

“As per the schedule, today, on 19th January 2026 (Monday), Nomination Process was completed between 2 PM to 4 PM. In all, 37 sets of Nomination Papers were received in favour of Shri Nitin Nabin for the post of National President. On scrutiny, all sets of Nomination Papers were found to be duly-filled up in the required format and were valid,” the press statement read.

Earlier in the day, the BJP set the ball rolling for the election of its new president with top party leaders submitting nomination papers of Nabin.

Nadda, Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and senior leaders Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav and Kiren Rijiju all handed over nomination papers in his support. Later, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other state leaders submitted another set of nomination papers in his support.

Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Nayab Singh Saini and Pramod Sawant were also present on the occasion. Leaders from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand and other states also submitted nomination papers in support of Nabin.

HOW DOES THE ELECTION PROCESS TAKE PLACE?

The BJP national president is elected by an electoral college comprising representatives from the its national council and state councils, with the process overseen by its national returning officer.

According to the BJP’s constitution, any 20 members of the electoral college of a state can jointly propose the name of a person — who has been an active member for four terms and has 15 years of membership — for the post of the national president. However, such a joint proposal should come from not less than five states where elections have been completed for the national council.
