Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal filed his nomination papers on Wednesday as he prepares for a fourth electoral contest from the New Delhi assembly seat next month.
As per his poll affidavit, he is facing 14 criminal cases, up from 13 in 2020. He is facing two cases related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy—one filed by the CBI and another by the ED—for which he went to jail in 2024 while serving as the chief minister. His affidavit claims that charges have not been framed against him in the matter.
Change in assets
In 2020, Kejriwal and his wife, Sunita, who gets a pension, had wealth worth Rs 3.44 crore, which has increased to Rs 4.54 crore, mainly due to the uptick in the market value of gold and the properties they owned before 2020. The major jump has been in the asset value of Sunita. The couple doesn’t have any loans or government dues pending.
As was in the 2020 papers, Kejriwal owns non-agricultural land he purchased in 1998 in Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram. The 2,400 sq ft of land that he purchased for Rs 3.50 lakh has a market value of Rs 1.7 crore. His last affidavit has its value marked at Rs 1.77 crore. In 2020, he mentioned having inherited a non-agricultural plot of land in Haryana. The 2025 affidavit has no mention of it.
Wife Sunita purchased a flat in Gurugram, Haryana, in 2010 for Rs 61 lakh. As against Rs 1 crore in 2020, the current market value of the 2,244 sq ft flat is Rs 1.50 crore. She owns about 1 kg of silver and 350 grams of gold. She continues to hold the same in 2025, though there has been a significant jump in the market value. The gold was valued at around Rs 12 lakh in 2020, which has doubled to Rs 25 lakh now. The silver was valued at Rs 40,000 in 2020 but now is worth Rs 92,000.
On the contrary, the value of movable assets owned by Kejriwal has gone down – from Rs 9.95 lakh in 2020 to Rs 3.44 lakh in 2025. The collective value of the movable assets of the couple stood at Rs 67.02 lakh in 2020, which has increased to Rs 1.34 crore in 2025. The value of the immovable assets has increased from Rs 2.77 crore to Rs 3.2 crore. While Kejriwal has no car in his name, his wife has a 2017 model Maruti Baleno Delta, the same as in 2020.
Sunita is also investing money in PPF and mutual funds, where the value has increased. She had Rs 13.44 lakh in her PPF, which has increased to Rs 26 lakh now. She has an investment in mutual funds of Rs 26 lakh.
In 2020, Kejriwal declared the annual income for the previous year (2018-19) at Rs 2.81 lakh, while Sunita had Rs 9.94 lakh. For the year 2023-24, Kejriwal’s total income was Rs 7.21 lakh, while Sunita’s was Rs 14.10 lakh.
‘Charges not framed in Delhi excise policy cases’
Projecting himself as the next chief minister of Delhi, Kejriwal is facing 14 pending cases, including two related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy—one filed by CBI and another by ED. He is facing two more cases from the ED for non-obedience to summons.
Interestingly, although charges have been framed against him in December 2024 for skipping the ED summons, no charges have been framed against him in the main cases, his papers claim.
He is facing six cases related to defamation. A total of two cases were filed against him in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi while he was campaigning for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, he claims.
One of the cases he listed was for the ruckus that took place in 2018 during the inauguration of the Signature Bridge in Delhi.
Kejriwal will be contesting from the New Delhi assembly seat for a fourth time after consecutive victories in 2013, 2015, and 2020. All Delhi assembly seats will go for polls on February 5, and counting of the votes will take place on February 8.
