Bengaluru’s civic body will now feed chicken, rice, and vegetables to stray dogs for an annual cost of Rs 2.8 crore.

Launching into a scathing attack on the Congress, the opposition BJP criticised the move to provide “biryani” to stray dogs. It said the state government has turned the city into “Biryani Bengaluru” instead of “Brand Bengaluru”.

The civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), countered the attack saying the meal plan for stray dogs has nothing to do with “biryani”.

WHAT IS THE MEAL PLAN?

The BBMP said its animal husbandry department will now provide chicken, rice, and vegetables to stray dogs in the city, which will cost Rs 2.8 crore annually.

It has set up 100 feeding spots in each zone, with food to be provided once a day for at least 500 dogs per zone all year round. According to estimates, the daily cost per dog is Rs 19 (excluding taxes), including Rs 8 for transportation, food supply, and site sanitation, and Rs 11 for the food.

“Since dogs are carnivorous animals, a balanced diet including protein is essential. Accordingly, the food provided includes boiled chicken along with rice and vegetables to ensure nutritional adequacy,” the BBMP’s note stated.

Countering the BJP’s  attack on the BBMP that “biryani” is now being served to dogs in Bengaluru, it said there is no mention of biryani or any such term in the plan.

A BBMP official working on the project said the food is specifically designed to be appropriate, safe, and nutritionally balanced for stray dogs. The meal plan has been formulated based on expert veterinary advice and information gathered from a pilot project conducted last year, the official added.
