Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who sparked a political row with his praise for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP, has clarified that there is nothing to learn from the supporters of Nathuram Godse, and reiterated his stand that every organisation needs strengthening.

After his remarks triggered a heated debate, Singh has repeatedly said that he remains opposed to the RSS’s ideology and was only complimenting its strong organisational framework.

“Whatever I wanted to say I have said already. Please understand one thing – I have been in the Congress party for 50 years and I have fought these communal forces in the Assembly, Parliament and the organisation. I have always opposed the ideology of BJP-RSS and I will keep fighting against them,” he told reporters on Sunday.

When asked about the importance of discipline from the RSS, the former Madhya Pradesh CM remarked that the Congress “does not need to learn anything from killers like (Nathuram) Godse.” However, he did say that every organisation needs strengthening.

Singh’s clarification came as several Congress leaders appeared divided over his unexpected praise for the Sangh. Congress leader Pawan Khera also linked the RSS to Nathuram Godse, saying, “There’s nothing to learn from the RSS. What can an organisation known for Godse teach an organisation founded by Gandhi?”

However, Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor came out in support of Digvijaya Singh, saying discipline within party is important and the Congress, having a long history, has a lot to learn from its own past.

“We have a history of 140 years, and we can learn a lot from it. We can learn from ourselves, too. Discipline is very important in any party,” Tharoor said. “Even I want our organisation to strengthen. There should be discipline in our organisation. Digvijaya Singh can speak for himself.”

Digvijaya Singh’s Remarks On BJP-RSS

Digvijaya Singh triggered a political controversy on Saturday after praising the organisational strength of the RSS. He shared a 1995 photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting on the ground near then BJP president LK Advani and said the Congress could learn from how the RSS and BJP allow grassroots workers to rise to top positions.

The post quickly drew attention as the Congress has often criticised the BJP and the RSS on several issues, making Singh’s remarks stand out sharply from the party’s usual line. The BJP seized quickly on the matter, saying the post showed open dissent within the Congress.

However, Singh later clarified that he remains a strong opponent of the Sangh. His remarks have sparked debate within the Congress at a time when the party is reassessing its structure and leadership approach.
