The 2019 video of Justin Trudeau mocking Donald Trump to an audience that included Emmanuel Macron has gone viral as the Canadian PM rushed to Florida to meet Presiden-election Donald Trump after Trump’s tariff threat. The duo reportedly shared the dinner after they had a telephone chat that followed Trump’s announcement of 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico if the two nations fail to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from their countries to the US.
Trudeau said he had a good chat with Donald Trump, during which they spoke about the challenges and how to confront them together. Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo initially said if the US threatened with tariffs, Mexico would also impose a counter-tariff, but Sheinbaum also spoke with Trump over the phone on this issue.
But then, Trudeau became the first G-7 leader to visit Trump since the US election. Trudeau adds to the list of unlikely visitors that Mar-a-Lago hosted in the last few days and that includes Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg too.
As Republicans are making fun of Trudeau for rushing to placate Trump, the old mocking video is viral. In the footage, Trudeau, Boris Johnson, Emmanuel Macron were in a huddle at a function at Buckingham Palace. Johnson asked Macron: “Is that why he was late?” to which Trudeau said: “He was late because he talked a 40-minute press conference off the top”.
Trudeau adds: “Oh, yeah, yeah yeah. He announced … ” before he is cut off by Macron, who speaks animatedly to the group. “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor,” Trudeau said at one point. Macron’s back was to the camera and his words were inaudible. They did not mention Trump but it was obvious that they were referring to Trump’s press conference that day.
The video in fact created quite a stir at that time and Trudeau admitted that he and other world leaders were talking about Trump. “Last night I made reference to the fact that there was an unscheduled press conference before my meeting with President Trump. I was happy to be part of it but it was certainly notable,” Trudeau said at that time.
