The TMC’s decision signals a rift in the opposition camp over strategy in Parliament.
Commenting on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said his party had asked Congress to submit an appeal before the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla before moving a no-confidence motion against him.
“Even yesterday we made it clear that all the TMC MPs will sign the no-confidence motion resolution, but our suggestion to them was that the issues, including suspension of MPs, LoP not being allowed to speak, women MPs being falsely accused and that the Chair is working in the biased manner… We said that firstly, we should write a letter in the form of a protest to the Speaker and the signatures of all opposition MPs should be there and we should give the Speaker 2-3 days’ time. If the Speaker does not take any action to it, then we always have the room to move no confidence motion, we have not problem,” he said.
Why Opposition Moved A No-Confidence Motion Against Om Birla
The opposition parties, mainly Congress, have alleged that the Speaker is acting as per the directions of the government. Congress MP K C Venugopal has alleged that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders are not being allowed to air their views in the Lower House, while the government side can state whatever they want and even make “derogatory remarks” against the opposition members.
In an unprecedented development, the Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks on Thursday last without the prime minister’s customary reply that was scheduled a day earlier in the face of relentless sloganeering by opposition members.
An anguished Lok Sabha Speaker last Thursday said he had “concrete information” that many Congress members might move towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat and carry out “some unexpected act” as a result of which he had requested him not to come to the House to reply to the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address.
As the Lower House reassembled after three adjournments on Thursday, Birla said if this incident had taken place, then this would have left the democratic traditions of the country in “shreds”.
However, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had dismissed the Speaker’s remark as an “absolute lie” and said that there was no plan to hurt Modi. She also alleged that Prime Minister Modi was “hiding behind” the Speaker.
