Ameet Satam, the newly-appointed Mumbai BJP president, took a shot at the Thackeray brothers for trying to change the city’s identity, asserting that Mumbaikars were fully aware of how the Centre and the current state government had worked for the development of the city.

Satam, the BJP MLA from Andheri (West), was appointed as the president of its Mumbai unit ahead of the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls on Monday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis said that the BJP will reclaim power in the BMC under Satam’s leadership.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Mumbai and was announced by Maharashtra BJP Chief Ravindra Chavan in a press conference, where Fadnavis and State Cabinet Minister and former Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar were also present.

Addressing a press conference, Satam said he would give importance to Mumbaikars’ safety, especially in light of “attempts to change the city’s identity”. He said the recent unity between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray was not important, as Mumbaikars knew who had delivered in the last 11 years.

“People coming together is not important. Mumbaikars have seen who has worked for them, how the Centre has pumped in money and worked on policies for the city. Development is more important,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The 49-year-old BJP MLA also accused the BMC of offering “visionless and non-transparent governance” between 1997 and 2022 and promised “revolutionary changes” in the city.

He also stressed that safety was a top priority in Mumbai. “Some parties that have lost ground are trying to change the face and colour of the city by taking the help of anti-national elements. We will thwart every such attempt and protect Mumbai,” he added.

He also refuted rumours of any discontent within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. “There are no issues in the Mahayuti. We work in tandem with excellent cooperation. These are perceived problems created by the opposition,” he said.

This came after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut pointed to Ashish Shelar’s exit as Mumbai BJP chief as a sign of an internal rift within the alliance. Shelar hit back at his remarks, calling on Raut to “look at the confusion within the MVA”.
