Three police officers were fatally shot and two others critically injured during a shooting connected to a police incident in North Codorus Township on Wednesday, authorities said. The officers were at the scene, located amid rural farmland, following up on a domestic-related investigation that began the previous day.“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” Governor Josh Shapiro said at a news conference. “We grieve the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, this Commonwealth, who served this country. This kind of violence is not acceptable. We need to do better as a society.”The shooting occurred in North Codorus Township, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia. The incident unfolded along a rural road lined with farms and a red barn, news agency AP reported.Social media visuals showed helicopters landing in fields to airlift the injured. The shooting is among the deadliest incidents for Pennsylvania police this century. In 2009, three Pittsburgh officers responding to a domestic disturbance were ambushed and killed by a man wearing a bulletproof vest.Condolences began pouring in from police departments across the region, and members of the public left flowers at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters.“The grief will be unbearable, but we will bear it,” said Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris, promising a full and fair investigation.Dirk Anderson, a local farmer living across the road from the scene, said he was in his workshop when he heard “quite a few” gunshots. He witnessed helicopters arriving and a large police response. The two injured officers were taken to York Hospital in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not released the identities of the officers or the shooter, nor have they detailed the circumstances of the shooting due to the ongoing investigation.Governor Shapiro said he had met with the slain officers’ families, who expressed pride in their loved ones despite their grief. He also urged society to do more to prevent such tragedies, emphasizing the need for better mental health support and community care.Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the attack as “a scourge on our society” and confirmed that federal agents were assisting local law enforcement. The emergency response unfolded along a road bordered by a barn, a goat farm and fields of soybeans and corn. About 30 police vehicles blocked off roads while officers ensured public safety. A nearby school district issued a shelter-in-place order as a precaution, clarifying that students and schools were not directly involved.Earlier this year, a similar tragedy occurred in Pennsylvania when an armed man took hostages at a hospital intensive care unit, leaving one officer and the suspect dead.
