'Performative': US on recognition of Palestinian state by UK, Australia, Canada; terms Israel's security 'priority'

The United States has termed the recognition of Palestinian state by key allies like Britain, Australia and Canada a “performative gesture.” It further cleared its stance on the middle east crisis listing Israel’s security as one of it priority, along with the release of hostages.“Our focus remains on serious diplomacy, not performative gestures. Our priorities are clear: the release of the hostages, the security of Israel, and peace and prosperity for the entire region that is only possible free from Hamas,” AFP quoted a US state department spokesperson saying on Monday.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu too opposed the move calling it an “absurd reward for terrorism.”“We will also need to fight, both at the UN and in all other arenas, against the false propaganda directed at us and against calls for a Palestinian state, which would endanger our existence and serve as absurd reward for terrorism,” he said on Sunday. The UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal have formally recognized the State of Palestine, signaling a major shift in longstanding policy. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized a two-state solution, called for a Gaza ceasefire, and rejected Hamas’ role in governance. Canadian PM Mark Carney stressed preserving the viability of a two-state solution despite US opposition, while Portugal’s foreign minister Paulo Rangel described recognition as a consistent, widely supported policy ahead of the UN General Assembly.Since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200, Gaza has suffered devastating losses in Tel Aviv’s retaliation. Over 65,000 Palestinians have died and roughly 1,66,000 have been injured, according to the health ministry. Nearly 90% of the population has been displaced, and famine conditions are emerging in Gaza City, as the conflict fuels ongoing international diplomatic concern and condemnation.
