Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold a public meeting in Singur, Hooghly district, on January 18 during his proposed two-day visit to West Bengal. Local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have indicated that the Prime Minister plans to address a rally at Gopalnagar mouza in Singur, the site originally proposed for the Tata Motors Nano car factory.

Hooghly BJP president Gautam Chatterjee told News18 that the Prime Minister might visit Singur on either January 17 or 18. “The Honourable Prime Minister is likely to come to Singur’s Gopalnagar mouza, where the Tata factory was supposed to come up. We have already inspected the ground. We are thrilled, as we believe he will deliver a message on industrialisation. His visit will carry a strong signal and indicate the possibility of change,” Chatterjee said.

BJP leaders believe the Prime Minister’s choice of Singur is significant, expecting him to send a strong message on industrial development from the site. Singur is where Tata Motors withdrew its project following a prolonged protest movement led by Mamata Banerjee against land acquisition.

A senior BJP leader told News18 that Singur had previously been a key centre of “parivartan” (change) in Bengal politics, and the party hopes for a similar political impact this time.

While official confirmation of the Prime Minister’s itinerary is still awaited, local BJP leaders are enthusiastic about the proposed visit.

Singur holds a crucial place in Bengal’s political and industrial history. During the Left Front government’s tenure, Tata Motors proposed manufacturing the low-cost Nano car at the Singur plant, with an annual production target of one lakh vehicles. However, land acquisition issues led to sustained protests led by Mamata Banerjee, causing Tata Motors to withdraw from Singur in October 2008 and relocate the project to Sanand in Gujarat. This move had a lasting impact on West Bengal’s industrial image and political landscape.

According to tentative plans, the Prime Minister is expected to visit Malda on January 17 and Singur in the Hooghly district on January 18.
