Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday alleged that an attempt was made to entrap him in a honey trap during the Jharkhand Assembly elections held in November last year.
Speaking to the media, Sarma said two women had approached him and engaged in conversations he found suspicious. The Assam CM said he immediately asked them to leave.
Sarma linked the incident to a post made by Leader of Opposition and Jharkhand BJP chief Babulal Marandi on social media platform X. He suggested the incident may have been part of a larger “political conspiracy”.
In his post, Marandi alleged that a senior Jharkhand police officer had paid someone twice to travel to Delhi and Guwahati in an attempt to frame the Assam Chief Minister in a conspiracy. He further claimed that evidence of this would soon come to light.
The senior BJP leader, who was the first chief minister of Jharkhand, questioned whether Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren was aware of the alleged actions and urged him to clarify his role.
He also warned that an officer willing to target a high-ranking official like Sarma could just as easily turn against Soren in the future for personal gain.
“Hemant ji, don’t you think that an officer who, driven by greed for position and money, dares to commit such a vile act and conspiracy against someone holding a prestigious high office in the country, could, in bad times, do something equally despicable and dirty against you for their own benefit?,” he wrote.

At the time of the election, Assam Chief Minister was BJP’s co-incharge for Jharkhand and was actively involved in the party’s campaign and strategy.
The Jharkhand Assembly elections, held in November 2024, saw the JMM-led Mahagathbandhan (INDIA bloc) return to power with a strong mandate. The alliance, which included the Congress, CPI(ML)L, and RJD, won 56 seats, securing 44.37% of the total vote.
The JMM alone won 34 seats with 23.44% of the vote share.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the second-largest party, winning 21 seats and securing 33.18% of the vote. The BJP-led NDA alliance managed a total of 24 seats, with 38.14% of the vote share — a result considered below the party’s expectations.
