A war of words erupted between BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sira and Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after the latter expressed concern over the “filthy smog” enveloping Delhi, calling it “a grey shroud” and urged authorities to act swiftly.

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa responded to Gandhi’s remarks and accused the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of decades of inaction that turned Delhi into a “gas chamber.”

He claimed that the BJP government in Delhi achieved what previous Congress and AAP governments couldn’t accomplish in 25 years.

“Priyanka ji, first of all, I want to tell you that the task of providing relief to Delhi from pollution, which your and your thug alliance partner Kejriwal ji’s incompetent governments couldn’t accomplish in 25 years, has been achieved by our government under the vision of the honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and the strong leadership of the esteemed Chief Minister Smt. @gupta_rekha ji. That’s why you’re having a stomach ache!” he said in a post on X.

“That’s why you’re having a stomach ache! This is the result of 15 years of Congress and 10 years of Aam Aadmi Party’s utter incompetence that Delhi has turned into a gas chamber. Where was this wisdom when your own governments were in power at the Centre and in Delhi?” he added.

Sirsa further claimed that under the BJP-led administration, Delhi had recorded the highest number of ‘Clean Days’ in just seven months, asserting that “this is data speaking, not empty rhetoric.”

His response came after the Congress general secretary said that while returning to Delhi air from Wayanad first, then Bachwara in Bihar, is truly shocking. The pollution enveloping this city is like a grey shroud thrown over it, Gandhi said.

“It’s really about time all of us get together regardless of our political compulsions and do something about it. The central and state governments need to act immediately, we will all support and cooperate with whatever actions they choose to take to mitigate this awful situation,” she said in a post on X.

Highlighting the issue, she urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Environment Minister Bhupender Yada,v and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to intervene and take immediate steps to clear the ‘filthy smog’ people are breathing.

Delhi’s air quality remained ‘very poor’ on Sunday as slow wind speed reduced dispersion of pollutants over the city, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The national capital’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 386 in the morning, a considerable rise from 303 on Saturday, CPCB data showed.

The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) for Delhi said wind speed dropped below 8 kmph from the northwest direction during the evening and night, reducing the dispersion of pollutants.

Seventeen monitoring stations recorded ‘severe’ air quality with readings above 400. Wazirpur recorded the highest AQI at 439. Twenty other stations reported ‘very poor’ air quality with readings above 300, the CPCB’s Sameer app showed.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’.
