Addressing NDA MPs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stressed on the critical role of building a self-reliant India. He highlighted the recently announced GST reforms, describing them as a landmark measure set to positively impact Indians.

Drawing an analogy on the second day of a two-day workshop organised by the BJP, Modi said: “Just as a ship at sea needs a push to sail through strong winds, and a vehicle requires power in its tyres to gain speed, similarly, India needs the collective effort of parliamentarians to carry the momentum of reforms forward.”

Modi urged MPs to actively interact with people and raise awareness on the tangible benefits of these reforms. To strengthen this effort, he advised them to hold vyapar sammelans (trade conferences) recommending at least 25 such events per constituency. He added that the goal is to create a lasting impact on public understanding of the reforms.

Another key focus of his address was the Swadeshi Movement. He called upon MPs to promote the purchase of made-in-India products, especially during the upcoming Navratri and Diwali seasons, which see significant consumer activity. The mantra to be promoted is ‘Garv se bolo hum swadeshi hai‘ (Say with pride that we are swadeshi and encouraging people to choose homegrown products).

Union minister Kiren Rijiju, in an exclusive conversation with News18, said: “MPs must play a pivotal role in promoting Indian products. The Swadeshi movement is crucial for achieving the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.”

Recounting India’s growth story from 2014 to 2024, the Prime Minister reiterated that India has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

“This exceptional growth invites unique challenges, especially with our GDP as high as 7.8 and only few nations have managed such a trajectory. The message is clear – India must remain self-reliant and resilient in the face of global uncertainties,” Rijiju said.

In line with this vision, Modi urged MPs to hold ‘sansad swadeshi melas’ and exhibitions in their constituencies during the festive season to further promote local products and boost the economy.

In a significant decision, meanwhile, he decided against holding a ceremonial dinner ahead of the vice presidential elections, considering the flood situation in states like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Immediately after casting his vote on Tuesday (September 9), he will visit the two northern states to assess the affected areas.

The PM will reach Kangra in Himachal Pradesh at 1.30 pm, where he will chair a high-level review meeting and interact with officials, flood victims, and disaster relief teams. Following this, around 3 pm, he will conduct an aerial survey of flood-hit regions in Punjab before arriving in Gurdaspur at 4.15 pm for ground-level reviews and interactions with local officials and affected communities.
