The roof of a well-known discotheque collapsed in the capital of the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 70.
The accident occurred at Jet Set, the famous club in Santo Domingo, where merengue singer Rubby Pérez was on stage. Pérez, one of the victims, was taken to a hospital close by. His condition has not yet been disclosed.
Rescue crews are still digging through the rubble, hoping to find survivors. “We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble,” said Juan Manuel Méndez, head of the country’s Center of Emergency Operations.
Videos from the scene depicted the roof collapsing in mid-concert, with frightened patrons running for cover as dust and debris hung in the air.
Officials have launched an investigation into what caused the structural failure at the popular venue, which regularly hosts major music acts.
