The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a ruckus by opposition members over a controversial remark by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey inside the Lower House of Parliament during his speech.
Citing some books, Dubey made some comments on former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, drawing the ire of the Congress party.
Congress MPs later went to Speaker Om Birla’s Office to complain against Dubey, leading to an argument with BJP MPs, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who were present. Dubey was also there.
In its complaint, Congress asked why Dubey was allowed to quote a book. “Why are there different rules? Why did he make derogatory personal comments against Nehru and Indira?”
Congress’s complaint assumes significance as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to quote a book based on the memoir of former Army chief MM Naravane on the Galwan Valley clash. However, the government contended that the book, Rahul Gandhi wanted to quote, is unpublished and Speaker Om Birla also gave a ruling in the matter against the opposition leader.
The Lok Sabha has been witnessing repeated adjournments since Monday after Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak on the India-China clash. Several opposition members also refused to speak in support of the Congress leader.
The opposition MPs have said that they will not let Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak in the Lok Sabha if Rahul Gandhi is not allowed to deliver his speech.
Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla urged the opposition to follow parliamentary norms and not lower the dignity and traditions of the House while registering their protest. He also said that breaching decorum could undermine public trust in the democratic
“If you break dignity, then people of the country will lose trust in democracy. You all are senior leaders, but it is not right that you break the rules of the House. Protest is not done by sloganeering or carrying posters, protest is done by words, logical arguments,” he said.
