Aditya Birla Group-owned luxury fashion label Sabyasachi Couture has appointed Manish Chopra as its chief executive officer, people aware of the development said. Chopra joins from Reliance Retail-backed Shein India, where he was a senior leader.

The move comes at a time when the home-grown apparel retail market is seeing a revival after a subdued 2024, and Indian luxury labels such as Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra and Gaurav Gupta are taking their luxury labels global.

Chopra had joined Reliance Retail Ventures to lead Shein India’s operations in the middle of last year from social media platform Meta. However, the Chinese fashion retailer’s consumer app remains in the initial stages in India, even two years after Reliance Retail inked a strategic partnership with Shein.

The two companies are also in discussions for their global sourcing partnership after Beijing discouraged local Chinese companies from shifting production overseas amid a tariff war with the US.

Email queries sent to Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd. (ABFRL)-which holds a majority stake in Sabyasachi Couture–and Reliance Retail remained unanswered.

Sabyasachi had sold 51% stake to the Aditya Birla Group in 2021 for ₹398 crore. The latter has acquired stakes in multiple fashion design houses as well, such as Tarun Tahiliani, Masaba and Shantanu-Nikhil.
