With only months left for the West Bengal Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to the people of the state. In the letter, he said he was “heartbroken” over what he described as the present condition of West Bengal.

Beginning the letter with ‘Joy Maa Kali’, he alleged that the people of his envisioned “shonar Bangla” had faced deceit under the rule of the current Trinamool Congress government. He said Bengal deserved better governance and renewed development and the Bharatiya Janata Party can do that.

The Prime Minister pledged to work towards building a “Vikshit Bengal” and sought support from the Bengalis to transform the state’s future. Urging people to vote for the BJP in the upcoming election, he said the future of future of “shonar Bengla” lies in the hands of its own people.

“The future of our Shonar Bangla (Golden Bengal) depends on your firm decision. I urge you to vote for the BJP in the interest of West Bengal’s development,” PM said.

The letter also referred to welfare and development measures. It said crores of people in West Bengal had been brought under banking services through the Centre’s Jan-Dhan Yojana. It mentioned financial assistance of Rs 2.83 lakh crore extended to small traders and entrepreneurs.

The letter stated that 1.5 crore families in Bengal received cooking gas connections under the Ujjwala scheme and that thousands benefited from widow and disability pensions.

The Prime Minister said West Bengal was once one of India’s leading industrial states after Independence. He claimed that the state’s 65-year-old industrial legacy was being destroyed due to political uncertainty and short-sighted policies. He said many industries had shut down, unemployment had increased, and many young people were forced to migrate to other states for work.

“Through three major public welfare initiatives of the state government, crores of people have been brought into banking services under the Jan-Dhan Yojana. Financial assistance was provided when the ruling party snatched jobs from the common people. Rs 2.83 lakh crore was extended to small traders and entrepreneurs. Under the Ujjwala scheme, 1.5 crore families have received cooking gas connections. Good governance, free from corruption, and continuity of development remain our commitment. I appeal to you to vote for BJP to continue this journey forward,” reads the Prime Minister’s letter.

The PM also alleged that the ruling TMC tried to obstruct this path of progress in Bengal.

He added that corruption and nepotism in governance must end and that transparent and accountable administration must be established. He called upon people to come forward to build a developed, prosperous and peaceful West Bengal.
