Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde launched a sharp attack on the UBT faction of the Shiv Sena on Tuesday, accusing it of neglecting the very Marathi people it now claims to champion during election season. Speaking after a high-level meeting in Mantralaya on the fate of 65 illegal buildings in Kalyan-Dombivli, Dr Shinde said the “Marathi manoos was pushed out of Mumbai” when the UBT leadership controlled the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to him, Marathi families spent 10 to 15 years in transit camps without any meaningful effort from the then-ruling party to secure their homes. “They had power and a historic opportunity, but nothing was done. Now, when elections are near, they remember the Marathi cause,” Dr Shinde said, accusing the UBT of political posturing. The meeting, held with Urban Development Department Principal Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary Asim Gupta, focused on the looming demolition of 65 buildings declared unauthorised in the KDMC area. Thousands of families who purchased flats in good faith now face eviction after courts ruled that the structures were illegal, with developers accused of cheating buyers.

Dr Shinde said Tuesday’s discussion centred on finding legally sound and humane relief measures for affected residents. One key proposal put forward was to encourage residents to form cooperative housing societies so that the land ownership process could be regularised in their favour. However, he acknowledged that significant technical hurdles—including property registration issues and delays in updating land records—remain.

He urged authorities to fast-track the registration process for more than half of these buildings and to pursue swift action against errant developers. A joint proposal is now being drafted by the Urban Development Department, the Thane Collectorate, and the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. This proposal will be presented at an upcoming cabinet meeting for further direction.

The meeting was attended by MLA Rajesh More, Thane Collector Dr Shrikrishna Panchal, KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goyal, and several senior Shiv Sena leaders. Dr Shinde reiterated that the Mahayuti government has consistently worked to secure homes for Marathi citizens and accused the opposition of resorting to complaints before the Election Commission because they “sense they are losing ground”.
