Deadly Cough Syrup Case: WHO Points To Regulatory Gap In India
Indian authorities have issued warnings to the public to avoid two more cough syrup brands, Respifresh and RELIFE, after 17 children under five died from toxic contamination. The syrups, like Coldrif, contained dangerously high levels of diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical that can cause kidney failure, neurological complications, and death. The World Health Organization highlighted a regulatory gap in India’s screening of locally sold syrups and confirmed that three contaminated products were identified, none of which were exported.
