A Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged manipulation of electoral rolls during the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections has filed a chargesheet in connection with the case in Aland, Kalaburagi.
Investigators have established the role of former BJP MLA Subhash Guttedar in the alleged ‘vote chori’ and the SIT has filed seven chargesheets before the court, naming Guttedar and his son Harshanand among the accused.
The Karnataka government had constituted a CID Special Investigation Team to probe the allegations. After completing the investigation, the team submitted a chargesheet running into 22,000 pages.
The issue first came to public attention after Congress MLA BR Patil levelled allegations of vote theft. This was followed by a formal complaint from election officials. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also raised the issue, prompting the government to order the probe.
The case was registered on the allegation that the names of 5,994 voters were deleted from the electoral rolls in Aland. During the investigation, several details reportedly emerged, including the alleged use of cyber centres to carry out the deletions.
According to the chargesheet, money was allegedly paid by Guttedar to facilitate the removal of voters’ names. The investigation team has now formally placed the chargesheet before the court in connection with the case.
