Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that he has no idea who will be the next Vice President of the country after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation; however, he added that it is clear that the person will be a nominee of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“All we know is that it will be somebody whom the ruling party nominates, as we already know the composition of the electorate. It’s the two houses of Parliament. Unlike the Presidential election, where the state assemblies also vote. For the Vice President, it’s only the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. So we already know the majority. I think it’s fairly clear that the next vice president will be the nominee of the ruling party,” Tharoor said.

Tharoor further said that he hoped the Centre would consult the Opposition in the next Vice President’s selection. “We hope they consult the Opposition too, but who knows,” said the Congress leader.

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Sudden Exit

On July 21, which was also the first day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the position of the Vice President of India, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

Dhankhar’s term was supposed to culminate on August 10, 2027.

The Election Commission said that the next Vice President’s election will be held on September 9, and they will issue a notification in this regard on August 7.

The nomination papers will be filed till August 21. An Electoral College – comprising nominated and elected members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha – elects the Vice President.
