BJP MP Rajkumar Chahar on Wednesday raised concerns regarding the strict Taj Trapezium Zone and NGT regulations in Agra, saying that the beauty of the iconic Taj Mahal has become a curse for the city’s development.

While speaking during the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament today, the Fatehpur Sikri MP said that the historic monument, while a global attraction, has become a “curse” due to strict regulations under the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and NGT norms, which hinder industrial growth and job creation.

“The Taj Mahal in Agra is extremely beautiful, but unfortunately, its beauty has become a barrier for the people of Agra. The reason is that to preserve the Taj Mahal’s beauty, the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and related regulations prevent industries and factories from being established in Agra. As a result, the youth of Agra remain unemployed…” he said as quoted by news agency IANS.

The BJP MP emphasised Agra’s strong connectivity through major expressways and said the city has the potential to expand if given the right support. He proposed establishing an IT hub, saying the city needs development that protects the Taj’s beauty while creating work opportunities for people.

The Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) is a designated 10,400 sq. km air-protection area surrounding the Taj Mahal, created to safeguard the monument from environmental degradation caused by air pollution.

It is shaped like a trapezoid and covers parts of Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras, and Bharatpur.

Within the zone, strict regulations apply to industrial operations, fuel usage, construction activities, and vehicular movement to reduce pollution levels and preserve the monument’s structural and aesthetic integrity.

The TTZ was mandated by the Supreme Court in 1996 after studies showed that emissions from industries, foundries, vehicular pollution, and the burning of fuels were causing yellowing and corrosion of the Taj’s white marble.
