Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin made an unexpected public appearance on Friday by travelling on the Chennai Metro, turning an ordinary commute into a campaign outreach ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
From Chennai Central To DMS: A Campaign On The Move
According to a report in The Times Of India, CM Stalin boarded the Metro at Chennai Central and travelled to DMS station, using the journey as an opportunity to connect directly with the public.
During the ride, the DMK leader engaged with fellow passengers, interacted with daily commuters and appealed for their support, effectively transforming the trip into a grassroots campaign effort.

The move stood out as a departure from conventional campaign styles, allowing him to reach voters in a more informal and accessible setting.
‘A Journey Filled With People’s Affection’
Sharing visuals of the Metro ride on social media platform X, Stalin described the experience as deeply meaningful, calling it ‘a journey filled with people’s affection’.
He also reflected on his earlier role in the development of the Chennai Metro project during his tenure as deputy chief minister. Stalin recalled travelling to Japan to secure financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which played a key role in bringing the project to fruition.
Highlighting Metro Expansion And Vision
CM Stalin pointed out that the first phase of the Metro, connecting major routes such as Wimco Nagar to the airport and Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount, has already facilitated millions of passenger journeys.
He further noted that work on the second phase is progressing at a rapid pace. Once completed, he said, Chennai is expected to rank among the Indian cities with the most extensive Metro connectivity.
Reiterating his broader vision for urban development, he expressed hope that the dream of transforming Chennai would be realised.
Direct Voter Engagement During Commute
In a separate post, CM Stalin mentioned interacting with morning commuters during the ride and seeking their support for the DMK-led alliance. With the election date approaching, CM Stalin has stepped up his grassroots outreach. Earlier in the week, he undertook a morning walk in Sirkazhi, where he interacted with local residents, stopped for tea at a neighbourhood shop and appealed for votes.
At the same time, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been actively campaigning in Chennai’s Triplicane constituency, further intensifying the party’s presence on the ground.
Key Electoral Battle Ahead
The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 23, with vote counting set for May 4.
The primary contest is expected to be between the DMK-led alliance and the NDA bloc led by the AIADMK and BJP. Additionally, the political entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay has introduced a new dynamic, potentially reshaping the electoral landscape and adding a third angle to the contest.
