'They're killing Christians in large numbers': Is Trump planning air strikes in Nigeria? What US president said

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) said that America could send troops to Nigeria or launch air strikes to stop killing of Christians. While talking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump responded to a question about whether he envisioned troops on the ground or air strikes in Nigeria, saying, “Could be. I mean, other things. I envisage a lot of things. They’re killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria.” “They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. We’re not going to allow that to happen,” the US president added. Trump’s remarks came as he was heading back to Washington from his vacation home in Florida after a weekend. Earlier on Saturday, he threatened to take military action against Nigeria if it fails to stop killing of Christians. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that he has asked the Pentagon to map out a plan of attack in Nigeria. He added that if Nigeria does not stem the killings, US will attack and “it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians.”Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu told AFP that “Nigeria is US’s partner in the global fight against terrorism. When leaders meet there would be better outcomes.”“Nigeria welcomes US support to fight terrorism as long as it respects our territorial integrity,” he added.“We do not see the (Trump’s social media post) in the literal sense,” Bwala said.”We know that Donald Trump has his own style of communication.” Earlier, Bwala indicated that the two leaders could meet soon.“As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or in fact all faiths and no faiths, the differences if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in State House or White House,” he said in a post on X.This came after US released a list of countries that it says have violated religious freedom and added Nigeria back. The list also includes countries including China, Russia, Pakistan, North Korea and Myanmar.
