At the CNN-News18 Townhall in Mumbai on Wednesday, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the topic of Marathi culture and language, underscoring a stance of pride and unity while strongly condemning language-based incitement and violence. He stated that those attempting to incite people on the basis of language do not truly understand Marathi culture, which he described as one of inclusivity and respect.

Fadnavis credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for giving due respect to Marathi culture and language, suggesting that their administration has been a champion for the region’s linguistic and cultural identity. He contrasted this with the actions of “certain groups”, pointing out a perceived hypocrisy where those who oppose Hindi and other Indian languages readily embrace English with a “red carpet”.

He underscored the importance of protecting Marathi’s identity without resorting to animosity towards other languages. Fadnavis reiterated that it is not wrong to be proud of the Marathi language, but any form of hooliganism or violence in its name will not be tolerated. He noted that the government has taken strict legal action against such incidents and will continue to do so, highlighting a commitment to law and order.

At the townhall, the chief minister advocated for a balance between regional pride and national unity. He presented Marathi culture not as a tool for division but as a source of strength and heritage that should be celebrated responsibly and peacefully.
