Amidst the massive row over the use of animal fat in the preparation of Tirupati laddoos, home-grown dairy giant Amul on Friday issued a clarification stating that it had never supplied ghee to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD).
“This is in reference to some social media posts mentioning that Amul Ghee was being supplied to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). We wish to inform that we have never supplied Amul Ghee to TTD,” Amul said in a statement.
The diary giant further informed that we wish to clarify that Amul ghee is made from Milk at the companies state-of-the-art production facilities which are ISO certified.
“Amul Ghee is made from high quality pure milk fat. The milk received at our dairies passes through stringent quality checks including adulteration detection as specified by FSSAI. This post is being issued to stop this misinformation campaign against Amul,” the statement added.
Amul issued the statement after various posts on social media claimed that it was providing ghee to the temple. Social media users claimed that TTD changed the supplier of ghee from Nandini to Amul in the recent years.
What’s the controversy?
A massive row erupted on Wednesday after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu claimed that animal fat was used in Tirupati laddoos during the previous government when YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was the Chief Minister of the state.
He claimed that the previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government did not even spare Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati and used substandard ingredients and animal fat for making laddoos.
Later, TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy, addressing a press conference, claimed that the adulteration had been confirmed by a Gujarat-based livestock laboratory, on the ghee samples provided by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
He displayed the purported laboratory report which apparently confirmed the presence of ‘beef tallow, Lard, and Fish Oil in the given ghee sample.
The matter has reached the court as senior YSRCP leader Y V Subba Reddy filed a petition in Andhra Pradesh High Court over the ongoing controversy over the prasadam laddoos. Additionally, a petition has also been filed in the Supreme Court alleging that the act violates fundamental Hindu religious customs and deeply hurts the sentiments of countless devotees.
However, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has rebutted the claims made by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu over the ongoing controversy, saying that no violation took place under his government and the entire controversy is unwarranted.
The former AP CM also stated that he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, explaining how Naidu “twisted the facts” on the issue. The ghee adulteration allegations are atrocious, he said, and asked is it fair to play with sentiments of crores of devotees across world.
