Twitch faces backlash over apology to Emiru after TwitchCon 2025 assault incident

Twitch is facing intense criticism from fans and creators after issuing an apology to streamer Emiru for the assault she suffered during TwitchCon 2025 in San Diego. The incident, which occurred during a meet-and-greet session, involved an attendee physically assaulting Emiru in what many have described as a major security failure on Twitch’s part. Although the platform has publicly admitted its shortcomings and pledged to support nonprofits addressing sexual violence, the community remains deeply dissatisfied with its response. In a post shared on Twitch’s official social channels, the company said, “We failed to do both things in this case – to keep Emiru safe and to prevent the assault from happening. We deeply regret the distress we caused for Emiru, our other creators, and the entire community.” The apology, however, quickly sparked outrage, with many labeling it a “PR stunt” rather than a sincere acknowledgment of wrongdoing. Users on X (formerly Twitter) accused Twitch of downplaying the severity of the incident and failing to take accountability for allegedly letting the assailant go and withholding key evidence from authorities.

Fans call Twitch’s apology to Emiru “insincere” and demand real safety reforms

Online reactions have been swift and furious. Many fans and fellow streamers criticized the platform’s leadership, accusing Twitch of being dismissive and reactive instead of proactive. Across social media, users demanded structural change rather than another public apology, arguing that creators’ safety should be prioritized over corporate image. One viral comment read, “Twitch doesn’t need another statement. It needs to make conventions safe for the people who built the platform.”Critics also highlighted Twitch’s history of mishandled safety cases at conventions, questioning whether meaningful reforms will ever take place. Fans and creators are now calling for stricter vetting processes for event attendees, increased on-site security, and immediate enforcement protocols when harassment or violence occurs. Many believe these steps are essential for rebuilding trust between Twitch and its creator community, especially after such a high-profile failure. While Twitch’s donation to nonprofits working to prevent sexual violence was seen as a step in the right direction, many feel it’s not enough to repair the damage caused. The platform now faces mounting pressure to back its apology with visible action, by implementing stronger safety measures and restoring confidence among creators. Until that happens, the backlash over its handling of the Emiru incident shows no sign of fading. Also Read: Heartwarming moment as Cinna’s dad supports her and Valkyrae for another ‘Sisathon’ stream
