UAE: Emirates ID renewal and replacement now just one step for citizens, key details inside

In a major push to modernise citizen services and reduce red tape, the UAE government has rolled out a streamlined process for renewing and replacing Emirates ID cards. Under the updated system, UAE citizens can now complete the entire procedure in a single step, with the card’s validity automatically determined based on age—mirroring the process used for Emirati passports.

Zero bureaucracy programme: Second phase implementation

As part of the second cycle of the Zero Bureaucracy Programme, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has overhauled the Emirates ID services for citizens. The key change simplifies what was once a multi-step procedure into a single-step process—now limited to submitting the application and paying the service fee. This major shift is intended to eliminate bureaucratic friction, enhance the customer experience, and align with the UAE’s wider goal of delivering efficient, digital-first government services. The ICP highlighted that this move is consistent with its broader strategy to modernise smart services, shorten service journeys, and meet the public’s expectations for convenience and accessibility.

Automatic validity: Age based card duration now standard

A central feature of the revamped system is the automatic determination of the Emirates ID validity period, a model borrowed from the country’s passport service. The validity is assigned as follows:

  • 10 years for citizens aged 21 years and above
  • 5 years for citizens under the age of 21

This applies when the service requested is renewal. In the case of replacement, the new ID card will be issued with the same validity period remaining on the existing card. Applicants cannot alter or extend the validity duration manually in any scenario.

Smart Forms: One page application with no redundant fields

The Emirates ID application form has also undergone a redesign in the smart services system, available via the ICP’s official website and mobile application. Notable improvements include:

  • Removal of non-essential fields, such as address details
  • Elimination of redundant data already stored in government databases
  • Presentation of the entire application on a single page

These changes help citizens complete the process more quickly, while reducing the possibility of errors or duplication.

Where to apply: Website and app access made easy

The updated services for both Emirates ID renewal and replacement are already live and accessible through the ICP’s online platforms. Citizens can now complete the full process through the website or smart app, without needing to navigate multiple steps or submit duplicate information. This transition marks another milestone in the UAE’s commitment to digitally transform public services, enhance operational efficiency, and reinforce its reputation for excellence in governance and service delivery.

Step by step: How to renew or replace your Emirates ID

UAE citizens can now renew or replace their Emirates ID through a simplified process that involves just one step. Here’s how the process works:1. Access the Service

  • Visit the official ICP website or use the ICP mobile app available on iOS and Android.

2. Log In

  • Log in using your UAE Pass or ICP account credentials.

3. Start Application

  • Select the service:
    • “Renew Emirates ID” for cards that are expiring
    • “Replace Emirates ID” if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged

4. Confirm Personal Information

  • Review pre-filled information pulled from ICP records
  • No need to enter address or other redundant fields
  • The form is displayed on a single page for ease of use

5. Submit and Pay

  • Submit your application and pay the applicable fee online
  • The system will automatically assign the card’s validity period based on your age:
    • 10 years if you’re 21 or older
    • 5 years if you’re under 21
    • For replacements, the card retains the remaining validity of the previous ID
  • Note: You cannot edit or extend the validity duration manually

6. Wait for Notification

  • You’ll receive updates via SMS or email once your application is processed
  • Follow the instructions for card collection or delivery
