Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, widely known as MBZ, is the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Celebrated for his strategic acumen and decisive governance, he has transformed Abu Dhabi into a global economic and political hub. From advancing domestic development to shaping regional diplomacy, his leadership has positioned the UAE as a key player on the world stage.

His holdings span banking, energy, real estate, and international investments. MBZ is among the largest private landowners in the UAE. The Al Nahyan dynasty is described by Bloomberg as the world’s wealthiest royal family, with collective assets exceeding $300 billion, and MBZ, as the family head, stands at the center of this vast fortune.

Vision, investments, and global influence

MBZ has spearheaded efforts to diversify Abu Dhabi’s economy, reducing reliance on oil through investments in renewable energy, technology, and education. Signature initiatives include Masdar City, a renewable energy hub, and substantial investments in artificial intelligence, reflecting his focus on innovation. He has also strengthened Abu Dhabi’s global economic presence through ventures such as Emirates Global Aluminium and strategic partnerships with international corporations. In foreign policy, MBZ has taken a pragmatic and assertive stance. He played a key role in the UAE’s military involvement in Yemen and in negotiating the Abraham Accords in 2020, normalizing relations with Israel. These actions demonstrate his ability to project Emirati influence while balancing regional diplomacy.

Early life, military career, and rise to power

Born in 1961 in Al Ain, MBZ is the third son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding President of the UAE, and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. He studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, training in armored warfare, flight, and tactics. Returning to the UAE, he advanced through the military ranks to become Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, overseeing modernization and professionalization.MBZ is one of six full brothers, collectively known as the Bani Fatima, who hold significant influence in politics, security, and the economy. Notable siblings include Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, owner of Manchester City Football Club, and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, UAE National Security Advisor and head of two major business empires. Other brothers occupy senior government roles, further consolidating the family’s power.Following his father’s death in 2004, MBZ became Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and in May 2022, after the passing of his half brother Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he was elected President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s leadership within the federation and guiding the country’s domestic and international agenda.

Personal life and legacy

Despite his immense authority, Sheikh Mohamed maintains a modest personal lifestyle, focusing on national and regional strategy. He is married to Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, and the couple has nine children.MBZ’s legacy is defined by his role as a transformative leader. His combination of military discipline, economic foresight, and diplomatic skill has reshaped Abu Dhabi into a central power in the Middle East. Beyond his wealth, he has strengthened the UAE’s global standing, initiated sustainable and technological ventures, and positioned the nation for long-term influence. His vision continues to define both the UAE’s growth and its place in world affairs.
