In response to the unprecedented wildfire crisis devastating large parts of Albania in August 2025, the United Arab Emirates has deployed a specialized firefighting team to support local crews in combating the blazes. Arriving on August 11, 2025, the UAE team brought qualified personnel, helicopters, advanced firefighting equipment, and materials to assist in extinguishing fires in critically affected areas including Petrela and Gramsh. These operations follow directives from UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide urgent climate disaster assistance as Albania faces some of its worst wildfires in recent history.TL;DR:

  • The UAE dispatched a specialized firefighting team with helicopters and advanced equipment to help Albania battle multiple large wildfires in August 2025.
  • Wildfires across Albania, fueled by a severe heatwave and strong winds, have caused fatalities, injuries, and the evacuation of numerous villages.
  • Albanian officials praised the UAE’s swift and efficient support, highlighting deep bilateral relations and critical international cooperation during the crisis.

Overview of the Albania wildfire crisis

Albania has been enduring a severe wildfire emergency, with at least 37 forest fires reported nationwide within 24 hours at the peak of the outbreak. More than 30 of these fires remained active as of early August, ravaging forested areas particularly in the provinces of Elbasan, Vlora, and Berat. The wildfires have resulted in tragic consequences including one elderly man’s death from smoke inhalation, eight injuries, and widespread evacuations of villages to ensure civilian safety.Local authorities have reported that some fires originated from accidental blazes that quickly escalated due to dry conditions and strong winds. The southern city of Delvina saw unprecedented fire activity threatening urban zones, prompting emergency evacuations and military support to contain the flames. The heatwave plaguing Albania and neighbouring countries intensified the risk, worsening the scale and speed of the fires.

UAE firefighting support mission

Following the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a highly trained and equipped UAE firefighting team arrived in Albania on August 11, 2025. The mission aimed to bolster Albanian firefighting efforts with:

  • Qualified firefighting personnel experienced in complex wildfire suppression.
  • Helicopters conducting multiple sorties over affected areas including Petrela and Gramsh, dropping water and retardants.
  • Modern firefighting equipment and materials suited to handle large-scale forest fires in challenging terrain.

Despite difficult weather and fire conditions, the UAE team’s deployment has been lauded by Albanian officials for its quick impact and strategic effectiveness, demonstrating strong bilateral ties and regional solidarity in times of environmental crisis.

Regional and international collaboration

Albania has received firefighting support from several countries in addition to the UAE, including Czechia, Slovakia, Greece, and European Union Member States. International aircraft, ground teams, and coordination centers have been mobilized under various frameworks, such as the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This multi-national cooperation has been critical in managing the widespread fire outbreaks and protecting populated and ecologically sensitive areas.National Civil Protection authorities in Albania have also intensified preparedness and response, conducting large-scale wildfire emergency exercises earlier in 2025 to build readiness for precisely such scenarios. The ongoing collaborative firefighting efforts reflect a shared commitment to combating climate-driven disasters in the Mediterranean region.
