UnitedHealthcare CEO murder: Luigi Mangione was assaulted in Thailand before Manhattan killing — what report says

Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside the insurance company’s annual investor conference in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024, has reportedly been assaulted during his Thailand trip. The accused assassin boasted to friends via WhatsApp about his tumultuous nightlife while backpacking through Asia before returning to the US in July-2024 and committing the shooting that December, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

What happened with Mangione in Thailand?

Mangione, in one of his chats, said that he had been assaulted by seven “ladyboys” — a colloquial term for transgender women — in Bangkok and included a photo showing his bruised and scratched arm, according to texts examined by the publication. Mangione, an Ivy League-educated technology expert, embarked on a solo trip abroad in early 2024, during which he became friends with soccer player Christian Sacchini and another unidentified individual. Sacchini, who met Mangione at a Bangkok pub in March, told the Times that the alleged killer initially discussed video games and Pokemon before launching into a tirade about how “effed up” the US healthcare system is compared to Thailand. “He couldn’t believe it,” Sacchini said of Mangione’s astonishment at the low cost of an MRI in the Southeast Asian nation. Eventually, Mangione retreated to the lush Mount Omine mountains in Japan, seeking a slower pace and hoping to “meditate” and “do some writing” by a tranquil hot spring, the report states. Fellow travellers, locals, and Mangione’s own notes indicate that he transitioned from seeking human connection at the beginning of his trip to isolating himself, obsessing over how to make a dramatic statement regarding perceived injustices in insurance coverage, the Times added. “He didn’t use any digital devices,” said Juntaro Mihara, owner of a small guesthouse in Tenkawa, where Mangione stayed for six days. “He was quiet, and only had minimum necessary conversations with other guests or maybe didn’t talk with anyone.” Family and friends reported that Mangione went off the grid upon his return to San Francisco in July, 2024, ceasing to respond to messages and becoming inactive on social media months prior. In an August diary entry, the alleged gunman described experiencing poor sleep and feeling “foggy” while concentrating on how to combat what he perceived as injustice. “I finally feel confident about what I’ll do,” he wrote, the outlet reported. “The details are finally coming together. And I don’t feel any doubt about whether it’s right/justified. I’m glad – in a way – that I’ve procrastinated, bc it allowed me to learn more about UHC. The target is insurance. It checks every box.” Mangione has pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges for allegedly shooting the 50-year-old health care executive in cold blood outside UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference in Midtown Manhattan on December 4-2024. Following the killing, police discovered the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” inscribed on shell casings found at the scene. He was apprehended in Pennsylvania after a dramatic five-day manhunt. Federal authorities are seeking the death penalty against Mangione, who has since garnered a cult-like following of supporters endorsing the targeted attack against the father of two. Mangione is scheduled to return to federal court on December 5-2024. No trial date has been set.
