Leonard Serrato, a former assistant director of fraternity and sorority life at the University of Oregon, has parted ways with the institution following a controversial Instagram video in which he made inflammatory remarks targeting Donald Trump supporters.
The incident
In a video posted in November and later obtained by The Daily Emerald, Serrato lashed out at Trump voters, saying, “I don’t care if we’ve been friends our entire lives, you can literally go f— yourself if you voted for Donald Trump.” He went on to add, “If you are so sad about your groceries being expensive, get a better f—ing paying job. Do better in life. Get a f—ing education. Do something because you are f—ing stupid and I hope you go jump off of a f—ing bridge.”
The video, which quickly went viral, drew widespread criticism and prompted a swift response from the university.
Administrative leave and investigation
The University of Oregon placed Serrato on administrative leave shortly after the video surfaced, initiating an investigation into the matter. At the time, a university spokesperson described Serrato’s statements as “abhorrent and not in alignment with our values or mission.”
In a statement, the university emphasized its commitment to fostering a respectful environment that accommodates diverse viewpoints, acknowledging the discord between Serrato’s role in Student Life and the institution’s values.
Resignation
On Monday, a university spokesperson confirmed to KOIN that Serrato is no longer employed at the university. Details of whether Serrato resigned voluntarily or was terminated remain undisclosed.
Fallout
The incident has sparked heated debates on social media about free speech and accountability, with some condemning Serrato’s remarks as divisive and others questioning the university’s decision to sever ties with him.
Serrato has not made any public comments since the controversy, and the original Instagram video has been removed.
While the controversy has subsided, the episode highlights the challenges institutions face in balancing freedom of expression with fostering a respectful and inclusive environment.
