Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday slammed suspended Congress leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu over her “Rs 500 crore for chief minister’s chair” remark, calling the claim a “total lie.”
Speaking to news agency PTI, Amarinder Singh dismissed allegations made by Navjot Kaur Sidhu as “completely wrong,” labelling her and her husband, former minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, as “unstable.”
“That couple (Navjot Singh Sidhu and Navjot Kaur Sidhu) is unstable; I have observed them for a long time. He (Navjot Singh Sidhu) was my minister, and despite giving him two portfolios, he constantly complained. I even gave him the power portfolio, yet he quit and never took responsibility. His files remained pending for months. He wasn’t fit for the job,” Singh said.

“Her claim about Rs 500 crore being paid for chief ministership is a total lie,” he added.
The controversy began after Navjot Kaur Sidhu told reporters on Saturday that her husband would return to active politics if the Congress declared him its chief ministerial face for Punjab. She said they did not have the money to give to any party but could transform Punjab into a “golden state”.
She stated, “We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat… but do not have Rs 500 crore which we can give to sit in chief minister’s chair,” she told reporters on Saturday after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on issues, including alleged deteriorating law and order in the state.”
Facing massive backlash, Navjot Kaur issued a detailed clarification on X, insisting her statement had been misinterpreted. “I am shocked to see the twist given to a straight comment saying that the Congress never demanded anything from us… I said we have no money to offer for a CM’s post,” she posted on X.
Subsequently, the Punjab Congress suspended her from the party’s primary membership on Monday evening. Reacting sharply, she accused state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of being “insensitive and irresponsible, morally dishonest and corrupt,” adding, “I refuse to accept him as a President.”
Before the suspension, Kaur also alleged on TV that Congress’s Tarn Taran bypoll candidate Karanbir Singh Burj paid Rs 10 crore to two party leaders for his ticket, a claim Burj has rejected as baseless.
