The United Arab Emirates, now a beacon of economic prosperity and modern governance, owes its existence to the vision, courage, and determination of its founding rulers. Beyond the gleaming skyscrapers and thriving cities lie the deliberate choices and steadfast leadership of the UAE’s original leaders, whose foresight united seven disparate emirates into a single federation.

Sheikh Zayed – Father of the Nation

H. H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918–2004) is universally recognised as the Father of the Nation. Born in Al Ain as the youngest of four sons of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he became Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and the first President of the UAE from 2 December 1971 until his death in 2004. Sheikh Zayed’s leadership combined patience, vision, and a commitment to the welfare of his people. He spent his early years living among Bedouin tribes, learning their ways and cultivating a deep understanding of his citizens’ needs. Appointed as the Ruler’s representative for the Eastern Region in 1946, he oversaw the development of Al Ain, demonstrating early a talent for administration and urban planning. As Ruler, he channelled rising oil revenues into comprehensive nation-building: schools, hospitals, housing, and roads. His determination to ensure that all UAE citizens contributed to, and benefited from, the nation’s progress transformed the federation into a robust economic and social entity. Sheikh Zayed also played a central role on the regional stage, co-founding the Gulf Cooperation Council in 1981, supporting Arab solidarity, and advocating for humanitarian causes internationally.

Sheikh Rashid – Visionary of Dubai

H. H. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum (1912–1990) guided Dubai from a modest trading town to a cosmopolitan city. He succeeded his father, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1958, bringing foresight and pragmatism to governance. Educated at Al Ahmadiya School, Sheikh Rashid’s early engagement in the Majlis honed his understanding of administration and economic management. In collaboration with Sheikh Zayed, he forged the Union Accord of February 1968, which laid the foundation for the UAE. As Vice-President from 1971 and later Prime Minister, he oversaw rapid infrastructural development, establishing Dubai as a centre for commerce and international trade. He encouraged dialogue with citizens and fostered an inclusive approach to governance, emphasising that every resident had the right to voice opinions and contribute to progress.

Their collective efforts laid foundations for governance, infrastructure, education, security, and economic prosperity.Today, the UAE stands not only as an economic powerhouse but also as a testament to the determination, foresight, and dedication of these founding rulers.
