Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for participating in dance festivities on Red Road while North Bengal faces severe devastation and rising deaths due to intense rainfall.

“While everyone from the Prime Minister to the Home Minister is expressing concern and inquiring about the situation, how utterly inhumane and cruel must the Chief Minister be to not reach the affected areas and instead take to the carnival stage to dance!” Majumdar wrote on X.

He accused the Chief Minister of neglecting the people of North Bengal’s hilly regions and prioritising “games, fairs, and carnivals” over disaster relief. Majumdar also recalled recent electrocution deaths in Kolkata due to waterlogging, alleging that Mamata Banerjee “skillfully evaded all responsibility” while engaging in dance.

“Do not forget, Chief Minister, the common people of the state are watching all your actions. Your arrogance will be judged in the court of the people,” he added.

As per a warning issued by the Alipore Meteorological Department, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely over the next two hours. Seven districts of the state are under thunderstorm and lightning alert.

An orange alert has been issued for Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts for heavy rainfall, along with winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph.

A yellow alert has been issued for Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, and East Burdwan, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with lightning and strong gusty winds. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30–40 kmph.

Several trains have been cancelled due to heavy rains in five districts of North Bengal. According to North East Frontier Railway sources, Siliguri-Dhubri DEMU, NJP-Alipurduar Tourist Special, and Siliguri-Bamanhat Express have been cancelled since Sunday morning.

Some trains will terminate at stations such as Binnaguri and Gulma, while several others, including the Sealdah–Alipurduar Express and Sikkim–Mahananda Express, are being diverted. Additionally, the Alipurduar-bound Kanchanakanya Express will run from Sealdah, and the Delhi-bound Mahananda Express will operate from Alipurduar Junction via New Cooch Behar.

The landslide occurred at Dilaram on the Kurseong road, blocking the route to Darjeeling. Other roads, including Rohini Road, have also been affected, while Tindharia Road remains operational.
