All 36 MPs from Andhra Pradesh voted for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tuesday’s Vice President elections, bringing together political adversaries like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

This triggered objections from the Congress, which said YSCRP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy had chosen to back the NDA in fear of CBI cases and remarked that history won’t forget this “surrender and betrayal” of the former chief minister. The YSRCP, with 11 MPs, justified its move, citing “national interest”, and slammed the Congress for foisting the “CBI cases” against its supremo.

Speaking to News18, senior YSCRP MP in the Rajya Sabha YV Subbareddy said Jagan Mohan Reddy was “not a spineless person” who would get afraid of CBI cases.

“CBI cases were falsely foisted by your party (Congress). We have been facing these cases for the last 14 years, not now. Even when we were in power and in the opposition. We did not look back. Jagan Mohan Reddy is not a spineless person like your party people who have implicated him in false cases. We have the guts to face them because we did nothing,” Subbareddy told News18.

Just over a year ago, the NDA had beaten Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party in the state elections. The TDP has been a crucial member of the NDA at the Centre since 2024 with 16 Lok Sabha MPs, and has been at loggerheads with the YSRCP. But Subbareddy said the YSRCP’s move to vote for the NDA candidate was “in the interest of the country” as it is a prestigious election. “Our party president took the decision to back the NDA candidate much before the opposition alliance announced its candidate, B Sudershan Reddy,” Subbareddy said.

He said that, as per tradition, his party believed that a President or Vice President should be elected unanimously. “At the time our party president decided to back the NDA candidate, there was no candidate from the other side. When NDA sought support from our party, we extended our support,” Subbareddy said.

Asked about the BRS and the BJD abstaining from voting in order to maintain equidistance from both blocs, he said, “It is better you ask those parties. We think that keeping in mind the highest values of democracy, one should go for voting, and hence our 11 MPs have voted.”

The 36 MPs from Andhra Pradesh in both houses of Parliament include 11 MPs from YSRCP, 18 MPs from the TDP, five from the BJP, and two from the JSP (an NDA ally). All of them say they have voted for the NDA candidate, CP Radhakrishnan.
