Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that efforts were underway to ensure that Assam’s rich cultural heritage is recognised globally.

While addressing the Bagurumba Dwhou event, a traditional cultural programme of the Bodo community in Guwahati, PM Modi said that no other Prime Minister had visited Assam as frequently as he had, underscoring his commitment to the state’s development and cultural promotion.

“No other Prime Minister has visited Assam as much as I have… I want the culture of Assam to be recognised globally, and initiatives have been underway in this regard,” he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

The Prime Minister further described Bagurumba dance as a living celebration and a mark of respect for the Bodo society. He said the performance reflected the traditions, values and cultural consciousness of the community.

PM Modi said that Assam’s traditions are the pride of India and its history and culture enrich the nation. He said that Bihu has received national recognition and that Charaideo Maidam has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to BJP’s sustained efforts.

Taking a swipe at the Congress, he alleged that previous Congress governments kept Bodoland disconnected from the mainstream and encouraged infiltration for vote-bank politics.

“There was a time when killings were a regular occurrence in the state; today, the state is filled with the colours of its culture and traditions. Congress ensured Assam’s Bodoland remained disconnected from mainstream and it opened doors for infiltrators as they formed its vote bank,” he said.

Referring to the state’s transformation, the Prime Minister said the sounds of gunshots that once echoed in Assam have been replaced by the sound of musical instruments. He noted that the Bodo Peace Accord ended years of unrest and opened new avenues for education and development, bringing Bodoland into the mainstream.

Ahead of his participation in the ‘Bagurumba Dwhou 2026’, PM Modi held a grand roadshow at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Prime Minister during the roadshow, where thousands of supporters welcomed PM Modi with resounding sloganeering.
