Watch: Subway lines submerged as heavy rain batters New York City; flash flood warnings issued

The storm disrupted subway lines, submerged major roads, and prompted a state of emergency in New Jersey.Flash flood warnings and watches were issued across New York, New Jersey, and surrounding areas as the downpour swept through the region. In New Jersey, governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay indoors. In New York City, the heavy rain caused major problems for public transport. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said flooding had stopped some subway trains and caused long delays on others. A video posted online showed water rising outside a crowded train, showing just how serious the flooding was.Flooding forced the closure of both directions of the Cross Bronx Expressway at Jerome Avenue, according to the NYPD chief of transportation. The roadway, a key route through the Bronx, was completely blocked by water.New York’s emergency management agency posted on X that parts of the city and the mid-Hudson region were experiencing flash floods, urging residents to take caution. In Metuchen, New Jersey, mayor Jonathan M. Busch took to Facebook to inform residents of the local impact. “The borough was significantly flooded,” he wrote. The heavy rains followed earlier weather forecasts from the National Weather Service, which warned of intense rainfall and the risk of flash flooding across the Northeast US. Although conditions began improving late Monday, officials remained on alert for more rainfall and possible disruptions.Emergency crews were seen responding to incidents throughout the affected areas, and transportation services were working to restore normal operations. Authorities urged residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas or basement flats, to stay alert and be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.
