Al Hilal’s triumphant elimination of Manchester City in the Club World Cup was meant to be a moment of celebration. Instead, the mood turned somber after the heartbreaking news of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota’s death cast a heavy shadow over the Saudi Arabian club’s preparations. The 28-year-old striker tragically died alongside his younger brother Andre in a fiery car crash on a northern Spanish motorway.Jota’s passing deeply affected two of his closest compatriots at Al Hilal, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves. Both players share strong bonds with the late forward, having played together in Portugal’s national team and in the Premier League, with Neves and Jota formerly teammates at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A Difficult Day for Al Hilal

Al Hilal’s coach Simone Inzaghi spoke candidly about the emotional toll Jota’s death has taken on the squad. “We all know it’s a sad day because of what happened to Diogo and Andre. Unfortunately, these are things that shouldn’t happen, but they did,” Inzaghi said, as reported by AFP. “As we are all aware, we have two Portuguese players, Ruben Neves and Cancelowho were very close to the guys. Clearly, today was a difficult day for everyone. We tried to work, but the atmosphere was not the same as on other days. It was a tragedy.”The emotional weight was palpable during training sessions as teammates tried to process the loss while preparing for Friday’s quarter-final clash against Brazil’s Fluminense.

Support and Solidarity Within the Team

Full-back Moteb Al Alharbi expressed the squad’s unified support for Cancelo and Neves. “From the moment we woke up today, we were shocked by the news. They are teammates of his and we all felt the sadness, but we were around them,” Alharbi shared. “I also believe they will be ready, although they’ve had this shocking news.”Saudi winger Khalid Al Ghannam added insight into the emotional state of the Portuguese duo, stating, “They were not at their best emotionally, but I believe they will be focused for the game.”

Football’s Human Side

While Al Hilal’s players and staff strive to honor Jota’s memory on the pitch, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that even in the world of professional football, personal loss deeply affects players and teams. Whether Cancelo and Neves will take the field remains to be seen, but the team carries a heavy heart into Friday’s match. This poignant moment resonates especially with the UAE audience, where football holds a passionate following, and the human stories behind the game deeply connect with fans.
