All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday hit out at the BJP and the Delhi Police over the attempted attack by lawyer Rakesh Kishore on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and questioned the authorities after no charges were brought against the accused advocate.
In an address shared by the party’s official X handle, Owaisi accused the government of religious bias and questioned why no case was filed against the accused.

“Delhi Police did not arrest the accused because his name is Rakesh Kishore. If his name was not Rakesh but ‘Asad’, what would Delhi Police have done? BJP people would say, ‘Pick him up!’, ‘he came from a neighboring country’, ‘(Pakistan’s spy agency) ISI!’ — they’d open all fronts against that person,” Owaisi said.
Further highlighting the incident as an insult to Dalits, Owaisi said, “The Chief Justice of India is a Dalit by caste and I want to ask my Dalit brothers – a man throws a shoe at the Chief Justice in his court… what is going? The criminal said ‘India won’t tolerate the insult of ‘Sanatan Dharma’… but how did he the courage to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice?”
The Hyderabad MP further referred to recent court verdicts involving mosques and Muslims, and said “… but we did not pick up the shoe”.
What’s The Row?
In an unprecedented and shocking incident, an elderly lawyer attempted to hurl a shoe towards CJI Gavai in his courtroom in the Supreme Court on Monday.
Alert security personnel present inside the courtroom immediately intervened and prevented the attack.
The lawyer was swiftly escorted out of the court premises, and in the process, he shouted “‘Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan’ (India will not tolerate the disrespect of the Sanatana Dharma)”.
Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained calm, telling the courtroom, “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended his licence with immediate effect.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Justice Gavai and said the attack on him has angered every Indian. “There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,” PM Modi said, appreciating the calm displayed by the CJI.
The incident was linked to the accused lawyer’s unhappiness over the CJI’s remarks during a hearing in September, concerning the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho.
A bench headed by the CJI had dismissed the plea seeking directions to reconstruct and reinstall a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.
Terming the plea a “publicity interest litigation”, the CJI had said, “This is purely publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation.”
