Who was Didarul Islam? Bangladeshi-born NYPD officer killed in Manhattan shooting - hailed as 'hero cop'

On Monday evening, NYPD officer Didarul Islam left for duty, wearing his uniform to protect New York City. He never made it back home.Islam was among five people killed in a mass shooting at a Manhattan office tower, where a gunman opened fire with a rifle before taking his own life. Another person was critically injured.Police say the shooter drove from Las Vegas to New York and began firing inside the lobby of the skyscraper, which houses major offices including the NFL and global investment firm Blackstone. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Who was Didarul Islam?

Officer Islam, 36, was tragically killed in a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. Born in Bangladesh, Islam had immigrated to the United States in search of a better future. For the past three and a half years, he served with the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He leaves behind a wife who was eight months pregnant and two young sons.“Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived, a hero and protector of New York City. We will never forget you,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a heartfelt message on X. Adams also described Islam as “a true-blue New Yorker, not only in the uniform he wore but in his spirit and energy of loving this city.”Later, sharing a post on X, Mayor Eric Adams said, “I’m on the way to the dignified transfer of fallen police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in tonight’s senseless mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. He put his life on the line for all of us and died a hero. He and his family are in my prayers tonight, and I’m praying for the families of the three other innocent people killed tonight, as well as the fifth victim still fighting for their life.”Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam’s bravery, saying, “He was doing the job we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice.”The suspected shooter identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas had a documented history of mental illness, said Tisch.According to authorities, Tamura exited a double-parked car outside 345 Park Avenue with an M4 rifle, entered the building’s lobby, and immediately opened fire on Officer Islam. The gunman continued his rampage through the building, killing three civilians and injuring one more before taking his own life on the 33rd floor.Surveillance footage and police reports indicate that Tamura allowed one woman to leave unharmed but indiscriminately shot others inside, including a security guard and a person on the upper floors. As the city mourns, Officer Didarul Islam is being remembered not just as a dedicated police officer, but as a devoted husband, father, and immigrant who gave his life in service to his adopted home.
